Foot & Leg Mehendi

Foot and leg mehendi is most commonly booked alongside a full bridal hand design, since wedding photography almost always includes close-ups of the bride's feet, especially during the varmala and mandap ceremonies. The design typically starts at the ankle and works up the shin, or covers the top of the foot in a mandala or floral pattern that mirrors the motifs used on the hands, so the whole look reads as one cohesive design rather than two unrelated pieces. Coverage can go as high as just below the knee for brides who want maximum detail, or stop at the ankle for a lighter, more everyday version.

The foot itself needs a slightly different approach than the palm. The skin on the sole and sides of the feet takes henna stain differently, often coming out darker and lasting longer than hand designs because of naturally thicker skin, but it also means the artist has to work around the curvature of the foot and toes carefully to keep lines clean. I usually start with a centred motif on the top of the foot, ankle bands, and toe detailing, then build the design up the leg to whatever height has been agreed on.

A full foot and leg mehendi session for both legs typically takes around one and a half to three hours, depending on the coverage and level of detail.

Foot mehendi is especially popular for brides because detailed feet and ankle designs can add to close-up wedding photographs.

As with every design I do, natural henna is used for rich, long-lasting colour, with the same 24 to 48 hour development window before the final colour sets in. Because feet are on the ground for longer stretches of a wedding day, I recommend brides plan their foot mehendi early enough in the schedule to have proper drying time before footwear or extended standing.
