Bridal Mehendi

Bridal mehendi is the most demanding format I work in, and that is exactly why it gets treated differently from every other booking. A full bridal session covers both hands past the elbow and both feet past the ankle, built in layers: a fine outline first, then dense fill work, then the shading and detailing that give the design its depth. Most brides sit for four to six hours depending on coverage and complexity, and I plan the session around breaks — food, phone calls, family dropping by — because a stiff, uncomfortable bride does not hold still for six hours, and stillness is what makes the linework clean.

No two bridal designs I do look alike, because no two brides want the same thing. Some want the entire palm covered in dense traditional motifs with barely a sliver of bare skin showing. Others want an Indo Arabic hybrid — bold floral trails with negative space breathing room, finished with fine traditional detailing at the wrists and fingers. I also build in the elements that make bridal mehendi personal rather than decorative: the groom's name worked invisibly into a pattern for the traditional post-wedding hunt, a tiny portrait of the couple hidden in the centre of the palm, or a date and initials worked into a mandala. These additions get discussed and sketched out before the wedding, not decided on the spot.

Because this is the most important mehendi of your life, I insist on a pre-wedding consultation, either in person or over a video call, at least two to three weeks before the date. We go through reference designs, talk about coverage, discuss any specific family traditions you want represented, and I take hand and foot measurements so the design is planned to scale rather than improvised on the day. This also locks in your date, since bridal season weekends across Bangalore fill up fast, especially November through February.

Every cone I use is made from 100% natural henna — no chemical PPD blends, which is non-negotiable for a design that stays on skin for two to three weeks and needs to be safe for hours of contact during application. Natural henna paste takes longer to dry and needs to sit longer, so the stain builds gradually over 24 to 48 hours, going from a light orange to the deep brick-red or maroon most brides want by day two.
